Connecting hidden dots: Copeability…Burnout

A perspective from the How-to Human Roadmap©

What is Copeability?

It is one of the three ways we human. It is best understood as a resultant ability; one that is shaped by life’s events. Its distinct feature is – the defining force is outward, so we feel [em]powered by and [en]abled by the external.
How to spot Copeability?

We notice our daily language. Within. And around. Observe up: manager, leader, parent. Observe sideways: friend, spouse, team member. Observe systems – culture, family, social.

Are they powered by the external?
Their words will convey an unmissable presence of external reliance.
Rules, reviews, social dos & donts, advice, substance use, approvals, tried-and-tested templates, attainments, media consumption, tech reliance.

What happens when an external “charger” is unavailable?
An absence of a regular source disorients them and reveals a dependency.

Do external sources define their safety, certainty, and growth?
Their goals are to refine, add more, or enhance the external batteries.

Is their success defined by – how long does their battery charge last?
They are often admired as the best, most able, and high-functioning because they have built a toolkit of multiple external “batteries”, mastered “low-power mode”, and know how to “swap batteries” before they run out of charge.

How is Copeability connected to Burnout?

As a temporary state, copeability is a useful humaning strategy. It is a way to source borrowed charge to reset, rebalance, and make life manageable. In fact, it plays a vital role in our survival.

However.

When life’s curveballs are faster than we can manage. Speedy onslaught of changes, sudden turn of events, or unexpected creeping up of blind spots. Such conditions + copeability, make us susceptible to burnout.

Burnout Susceptibility 1 – External sources, the charging stations of copeability, typically support known demands. A surge in demand, or a new demand, often leaves them disappointingly insufficient. Yikes! The exhaustion from breakdowns leads to burnout.

Burnout Susceptibility 2 – With a smoothly-working dependence on external sources, copeability. We often neglect to muscle-up our internal power sources, capability & capacity. When life’s onslaughts meet an unregulated, dysfunctional nervous system. Boom! The collapse because of a frayed source leads to Burnout.

How-to Human Roadmap© is a technique we have built to unjumble and solve complex, real-life, and real-time human experiences (such as Copeability… Burnout).
